The Unemployed Librarian

Michael Rogowski, MLIS, HBA,

Anyone going to OLA’s Annual Institute on the Library As Place?

Ok, this is a bit of a plug, but I wants to get the word out.

This year, not only will we have the usual sessions, but the OLA New Building Awards Reception and Presentations. I recently underwent an archiving project to digitalize all the submissions from 2007 to 2010.

I’d suggest considering it if you’re looking to give your library a new look, or even consider the shifting paradigm of what a library ‘as place’ needs to be.

Highlights for me are the tour and information session for the Toronto Reference Library on Wednesday morning, and ‘From “Temple of Knowledge” to “Place of Desire”’ with the Innisfil Public Library. They’re really a leading edge here in Ontario on what a library needs to be in the 21st century, and I can’t wait to see what they have to say.

If you need more information  or are thinking about attending, there’s lots of information here.

Check it out!

You need some King Crimson in the middle of the week.

I have an interview with my local library!

librarean:

It’s set for next Wednesday, June 19th, and it’s for a ‘customer service specialist’ position, which is as good as I can reasonably expect without an MLIS.

It still promises valuable experience, and in a public library, which would be new to me as someone who’s only worked in an academic setting before. I’m excited to have the chance—time to go raid the storehouse of interview tips that I’ve gathered from my tenure as a tumblarian!

Yay!

Good luck! You’ve got us crossing our fingers for you!

Get To Know Your Tumblarians Tuesday: Hype

lecieltumultueux:

Is there a book/movie/TV show that everyone LOVES/YOU MUST READ IT/I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, but you didn’t enjoy it or had no interest in checking it out in the first place?

For me, I never had the slightest interest in seeing Avatar or in reading Gone Girl. No matter how many times people tell me no no, just give it a shot, or how amazing it was, I’m just like ehhhhh. No interest. Sorry.

I’ve also never read any Judy Blume.

What about you?

For me it’s Game of Thrones.

I don’t know why, but I just have no interest in it. I know all my friends are screaming at me, and actively do not believe me when I say I’ve never seen a single episode, nor read a single line on the page.

I know what’s going on, because everyone is constantly talking about it, so it’s not like I’m really missing out. I just don’t really feel like spending all that time invested in this book and television series when I have so much that I still need to get caught up with.

SUPERHERO TRAINING. We had the safest building in the land.

Two weeks ago the library played host to a bevy of young superheroes-in-training, as they navigated a balloon mine field, a laser maze, and rescued our dinosaur citizens using only their super senses and the directions of their compatriots. They made ID cards and had a…dare I say it…super time.

A balloon mine field!

So cute!

YES!

Good morrow good followers!

I’m back in the office with a computer! My home computer decided to take an extended holiday and conk out over the weekend, so I’m catching up with e-mails and the social media today.

As with all Tuesdays, I’ll be taking questions and also tumbling a little bit (enough to keep me alive, not enough that it will effect my work).

So drop me a line, I’m here to talk :)

librarianpirate asked: !!! YES! I have tried to explain to my husband before that I have to finish this book that I'm hating because it is my job to read them all out of peril but he doesn't believe me.

Keep at it! Even if it doesn’t pay off, you’ll hopefully still get that satisfaction of finishing that book! Some people just don’t quite understand.

Good luck!
